We stayed at Leelanau State Park and loved the campground. It is rustic camping though so isn't for everyone. We were there on a Sunday night in the middle of July and had the place to ourselves. One can usually find them by doing a internet search open Google Maps, zooman to Northern lower Michigan , and type in campgrounds or a variation thereof and then search for photos of a particular location and you think looks promising. I agree with Leelanau State Park if you want rustic but don't want to be too far off the beaten path. If you want rustic by a river mouth where you are in the wilderness then go to the Mouth of the Two Hearted River northeast of Newberry. This is a State Forest campground and there are some other state forest campgrounds west of Muskallonge State Park going towards Grand Marais. Muskallonge State Park is also cool but its not rustic. Thanks for all of the replies! Im leaning towards Fisherman's Island State Park. I love the idea of camping on a branch of the Two Hearted, but am worried my one year old couldn't handle it. Not the rustic aspect, he's at home outdoors, but the black fly situation in mid to late July. Maybe a stop at good ol' Hog Island is in order as well. Does anyone know if Fisherman's Island gets completely booked in advance? This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity. There have been three other owners before Dave and Reva Basinger purchased the campground in May of During the first week, we added the flower garden, and on the second week, we added swings to the playground. Later that first year, we became a Good Sam Park. In December we began updating the bathrooms. This is our second year as RV owners, and this was our first campground that we stayed at when we went out for our first camping trip. We liked it so much we have been back there 3 more times since then. The facilities are always very clean, and the owners are very friendly and personable. They made a point of visiting us and all campers at least once each stay. We will definitely be going back there again! We arrived at 8: Campground owners escorted to our site. They were awesome hosts and the campground is beautiful and safe. I only wish we could have stayed more days. We stayed here overnight. The park was conveniently located halfway between our destination. Good place to overnight. A few seasonal rigs in here. Everything well maintained and owners are very friendly. This campground is a real gem. The owners are very helpful and friendly. They have a well stocked but small camp store and even firewood delivery your site! Our site was fairly large with plenty of room for our 35 foot travel trailer and tow vehicle. Sites are dirt and grass and owners are improving the grass. Did you mention it is peaceful?! The owners enforce their rules and that is a good thing! We will be back. We spent one night at this RV Park and will not hesitate to return. Enjoy camping in Northern Michigan in our quiet, shady and friendly country setting!...
